Surrey- One of the most celebrated and respected figures in the Sikh community in Canada, Ret. Lt. Col. Pritam Singh Jauhal, passed away peacefully on Sunday with his family by his side. Lt. Col. Jauhal was 95 years old.
Lt. Col Pritam Singh Jauhal was the epitome of courage and sacrifice. He served admirably in several wars, most notably in World War II. While serving courageously in the armed forces while wearing his turban, in 1993, he along with other Sikh veterans were barred from entering the Royal Canadian Legion. Lt. Col. Pritam Singh Jauhal’s pursuit of equality and justice ultimately led to permitting Sikh veterans to wear their turbans inside Legions across Canada.
In 2013, Lt. Col Pritam Singh Jauhal published his incredible story in his memoir, “A Soldier Remembers”, in collaboration with the Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at the University of the Fraser Valley.
